A 67-year-old Polish woman died on Friday, May 29, in the Slovak Paradise National Park after separating from her hiking group and subsequently going missing in the Piecky gorge.
Circumstances of the Disappearance
According to the Mountain Rescue Service (HZS), the incident occurred on Friday, May 29. The 67-year-old tourist decided to separate from her group in the Piecky gorge due to concerns about the trail’s difficulty, while the rest of the group continued along the secured path.
Search and Rescue Operation
After the woman failed to return and could not be reached by phone, authorities were notified. The rescue operation involved seven mountain rescuers from the Slovak Paradise Regional Center, two rescuers from the Avalanche Prevention and Education Center, and three dog handlers with tracking dogs.
Specialized equipment, including a drone equipped with mobile phone detection technology, was deployed by emergency services and the Operational Center of the Police Presidium of the Slovak Republic to locate the missing tourist.
Discovery of the Victim
The search ended when rescuers discovered the woman’s body on the steep cliffs of the gorge, near the Great Waterfall. The HZS transported the body to the Hrabušická sawmill before handing it over to a funeral home, extending their condolences to the family.
