Presidential Spokesperson on Poland 2050 Crypto Asset Bill: President Will Announce Decision

A spokesperson for President Karol Nawrocki stated the president will announce his decision on the Poland 2050 crypto asset bill, mirroring his approach to all legislation.

Poland 2050 Bill Awaits Presidential Decision

Presidential spokesperson Rafał Leśkiewicz stated on Thursday, April 23rd, that the president will announce his decision on the Poland 2050 bill regarding crypto assets, just as he does with all legislation.

Leśkiewicz noted that neither Civic Coalition (KO) nor The Left participated in a meeting with Karol Nawrocki regarding the bill.

Lack of Support for Poland 2050’s Proposal

Leśkiewicz reminded reporters that Poland 2050 presented its proposal several months ago, and it has “not found acceptance among the ruling majority” since then. He added that the president previously met with representatives from parliamentary clubs and caucuses, but representatives from KO and The Left did not attend.

The spokesperson emphasized that this previous meeting was an opportunity to discuss important legislative projects.

Sejm’s Handling of Presidential Vetoes

The Poland 2050 bill reached the Sejm in early December last year, after the Sejm, for the first time, failed to override the president’s veto of a government bill. Adam Gomoła, representing the bill’s proponents, stated at the time that their proposal addressed some of the president’s concerns regarding the government’s draft.

Gomoła’s Commentary on Potential Presidential Support

Adam Gomoła commented on reports from Polsat News, stating that presidential support for the Poland 2050 bill would be a breakthrough for the industry.

“If this information is confirmed, it is a great day for the cryptocurrency market in Poland. We have worked for hundreds of hours, talked to everyone, and educated about this law to gain such support for our project, which seems to be the only rescue project for this market, and which may finally reconcile two warring sides,” Gomoła said.

Repeated Vetoes of Government Crypto Bill

Last Friday, the Sejm again failed to override the president’s veto of the government’s bill on crypto assets. This was the Sejm’s second attempt to override Nawrocki’s veto of the legislation regulating the market.

Arguments for and Against the Veto

The Head of the Presidential Chancellery, Zbigniew Bogucki, argued that the veto was not against the need to regulate the market, but against a “flawed regulatory model.” Prime Minister Donald Tusk, however, indicated that Russian money, including mafia funds, was behind one of the cryptocurrency exchanges financing events related to the right-wing.

Investigation into Zondacrypto Exchange

Justice Minister and Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek later announced that the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice had launched a criminal investigation into the Zondacrypto cryptocurrency exchange, concerning possible fraud and money laundering.

Extent of Damages in Zondacrypto Case

The prosecutor’s office subsequently stated that the amount of damages in the Zondacrypto case currently amounts to at least 350 million złoty, and reports from victims are coming from across the country. The investigation is focused on “misleading many people about the possibility of purchasing and storing fiat and cryptocurrency currencies within the Zondacrypto exchange and thereby causing unfavorable disposal of property.”
