Following the death of MP Łukasz Litewka in a bicycle accident, a prosecutor has appealed against the driver’s lenient bail terms and cautioned against public calls for vigilante justice.
Prosecutor’s Appeal and Warning
Doda, a Polish singer, publicly offered to pay for information about the driver who fatally struck MP Łukasz Litewka. Prosecutor Bartosz Kilian of the Sosnowiec-Południe District Prosecutor’s Office criticized this action, stating it undermines the ongoing investigation.
Kilian warned that such actions risk inciting a public lynch mob and committing a crime against the suspect. He directly appealed to Dorota Rabczewska (Doda) to allow authorities to investigate without interference.
Investigation Details
Investigators have secured the driver’s phone and are examining whether he was using it immediately before the accident. The vehicle, a Mitsubishi, was technically sound and properly registered.
Authorities are seeking witnesses who observed the incident and urge anyone with information to come forward. So far, no witnesses have contacted the prosecutor’s office or the police.
Arrest and Bail Conditions
The driver, a 57-year-old man, has been arrested for three months. He can be released upon posting bail of 40,000 złoty. The prosecutor’s office intends to appeal the court’s decision regarding the bail amount, as it does not fully align with their initial request.
The Accident
The accident occurred on April 23rd on Kazimierzowska Street in Dąbrowa Górnicza. MP Łukasz Litewka was struck while riding his bicycle. The driver has admitted guilt and faces a prison sentence of six months to eight years for causing death by negligence.
Who Was Łukasz Litewka?
Łukasz Litewka served as a councilor in Sosnowiec from 2014, representing the SLD-Lewica-Razem coalition, and was re-elected four years later. He unsuccessfully ran for Sejm in 2019 on the Social Democratic Alliance list.
Following the transformation of SLD into Nowa Lewica (New Left), he became a member and was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 2023 parliamentary elections, despite being placed last on the party list.
Charitable Work and Recognition
Litewka was actively involved in charitable initiatives, supporting children with disabilities and homeless animals. He was posthumously awarded the Honorary Badge for Merits to the Silesian Voivodeship for his social activities.
Radny Bartłomiej Kowalski described the award as a symbolic recognition of Litewka’s significant social engagement, charitable work, and dedication to the region’s residents, stating his actions left a lasting impact.
