Putin Announces Two-Day Ceasefire, Issues Threat

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a two-day ceasefire linked to Victory Day commemorations, while Moscow simultaneously warned of a retaliatory strike on Kyiv.

Decision Linked to Victory Day

The ceasefire decision is connected to the commemoration of the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War, as that part of World War II is known in Russia. The Soviet Union fought alongside the anti-Hitler coalition between 1941-1945.

Russian Expectations and Ukrainian Response

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated it “expects the Ukrainian side to follow suit” regarding the ceasefire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously called for pushing Putin towards diplomacy during a summit in Yerevan.

Threat of Retaliatory Strike on Kyiv

Russia threatened a “retaliatory attack” on Kyiv. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that if Kyiv attempts to disrupt the 81st anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, Russia will launch a massive missile strike on the center of Kyiv.

Moscow Parade Without Military Equipment

Russia announced it will hold a May 9th parade in Moscow without military equipment, which would be the first time in many years. Zelenskyy suggested Russia cannot afford to use military equipment and fears drone attacks over Red Square.

Trump’s Role and Previous Ceasefire

Last week, on April 29th, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced a phone conversation with Vladimir Putin during which they discussed the possibility of a “small ceasefire” in Ukraine. Kyiv authorities emphasized the need for clarification regarding the details of this conversation.

Trump stated he “suggested a small cessation of hostilities” and believed Putin could announce it. He inquired if Putin had already made an announcement.

Previous Orthodox Easter Ceasefire

The last ceasefire in the war against Ukraine was announced for Orthodox Easter, April 11th and 12th, lasting 32 hours. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian forces violated the terms of the “Easter ceasefire” 10,721 times.
