Russia Responds Firmly to Trump Over Greenland: “Unacceptable”

Zakharova Comments on Greenland Dispute

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova addressed the Greenland dispute during a press briefing on Thursday, January 15. She stated that tensions around the island “clearly show the shortcomings of the world order” built by the West. According to Zakharova, conflicts concerning Greenland should be resolved through negotiations in accordance with international law, taking into account the interests of the local population.

Russia Rejects Trump’s Claims

Zakharova responded directly to President Donald Trump’s statements about Russian and Chinese interests in Greenland. Trump had claimed that if the US doesn’t take control of Greenland, China or Russia will, presenting both countries’ actions as a security threat in the Arctic region. Zakharova expressed agreement with China, stating that references to Russian and Chinese actions as the cause of current tensions are “unacceptable.”

Trump Outlines U.S. Position on Greenland

During a White House press conference on Wednesday, January 14, Trump addressed what steps the US might take regarding Greenland. He stated that “he certainly will not give up various options” regarding the territory. Trump emphasized Greenland’s strategic importance for security reasons, noting that it’s also significant for Denmark. He added, “I cannot count on Denmark being able to defend itself.”
