Russia Strongly Responds to Trump’s Greenland Comments

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova sharply criticized Trump’s assertions about Russian threats regarding Greenland as unacceptable.

Zakharova Comments on Greenland Dispute

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the dispute over Greenland on Thursday, January 15 during a press briefing.

Zakharova stated that the tension around the island “clearly shows the shortcomings of the world order” built by the West. She added that conflicts concerning Greenland “should be resolved through negotiations, in accordance with international law, taking into account the interests of the population” living in that territory.

Trump’s Russia and China Comments Draw Response

US President Donald Trump claimed that if the US does not take control of Greenland, China or Russia will. He presented the actions of both countries as a threat to security in the Arctic region.

In response, Zakharova referred to Trump’s statement: “I agree with the People’s Republic of China that references to actions of Russia and China around Greenland, presenting them as the cause of the current tension, are unacceptable.”

Trump Outlines US Approach to Greenland

On Wednesday, January 14, Trump participated in a press conference at the White House when asked what the US intends to do regarding Greenland.

The American president stated that “he certainly will not give up various options,” adding that Greenland is very important for security reasons, also for Denmark. Trump noted: “I cannot count on Denmark being able to defend itself.”
