Sebastian M., the suspect in the deadly A1 motorway crash, has filed a formal complaint regarding his incarceration conditions at the Piotrków Trybunalski detention center, citing poor diet, blue lighting, and a lack of recreational facilities.
Complaints from Isolation
Sebastian M. has been held in solitary confinement in the Piotrków Trybunalski detention center since February for safety reasons. In late April, he submitted a formal note to the court detailing his grievances regarding the facility’s conditions.
The inmate alleges the diet is poor, consisting mostly of bread, margarine, and tea, and that he lacks access to books or physical education. He claims shower facilities are limited to two brief sessions per week with no hot water, and that the blue fluorescent lighting in the cells causes persistent headaches and eye pain. Additionally, he asserts that heating is turned off during the night throughout the winter.
Official Response and Legal Status
While the Ombudsman’s office has intervened in the matter, the specific outcome of that intervention remains unclear. Lt. Col. Arleta Pęconek, spokesperson for the Prison Service, stated that the conditions of Sebastian M.’s detention are in accordance with all organizational and security regulations.
The case stems from a tragedy on September 16, 2023, on the A1 motorway near Piotrków Trybunalski. A BMW driven by the defendant collided with a Kia, which subsequently caught fire, killing a family of three. Sebastian M. faces up to eight years in prison; the trial has been adjourned until July 28.
Testimony on Excessive Speed
During a recent court hearing, a former employee of Sebastian M. testified regarding the defendant’s driving habits. The witness described the defendant as driving significantly faster than average, often reaching 200 km/h during business trips.
The witness recounted an incident on the Warsaw-Białystok route where the defendant drove the BMW at speeds exceeding 300 km/h. “It was my speed record. I asked the boss how fast we were going, and Sebastian replied it was 304 km/h,” the witness stated, adding that he previously trusted the defendant as a driver.
