Second French Soldier Dies From Hezbollah Attack in Lebanon

A French sergeant died from injuries sustained in a Saturday attack by Hezbollah fighters against UNIFIL forces in Lebanon, bringing the French death toll to two.

Second French Soldier Succumbs to Wounds

Senior Corporal Anicet Girardin of the 132nd Infantry Regiment, based in Suippes, returned from Lebanon yesterday where he was seriously wounded by Hezbollah fighters. He died this morning from his injuries, according to the French President.

President Macron stated that the nation pays tribute to his memory and sacrifice, and that an official farewell ceremony will be held Thursday for Sergeant Florian Montorio, who was killed in Saturday’s attack.

Lebanese President Condemns Attack

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun again condemned the attack and offered condolences to France and the UNIFIL command, his office announced on X.

Polish Soldiers Near Attack Site

A mortar shell fell near a convoy including Polish soldiers, but no Polish troops were injured. The blast caused minor damage to three vehicles.

Details of the Attack and UNIFIL Mission

In addition to Girardin, two other French soldiers serving with UNIFIL were wounded in the ambush. The UNIFIL mission is scheduled to end this year.

UNIFIL currently comprises approximately 7,500 soldiers from 47 countries, including 140 Poles. The mission has been stationed in southern Lebanon since 1978, monitoring the security situation along the demarcation line with Israel.
