Sikorski Seeks Travel Ban on Israeli Minister Following Detentions

Following the detention of Polish citizens aboard a Gaza-bound humanitarian aid flotilla, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has formally requested that the Interior Ministry ban Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from entering Poland.

Diplomatic Protest in Warsaw

The Polish government has intensified its response to Israel following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla in the Mediterranean. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maciej Wewiór confirmed that a formal protest was lodged with the Israeli chargé d’affaires, demanding immediate clarification regarding the treatment of Polish nationals.

Wewiór stated that Poland expressed its strong indignation over the detentions, while receiving assurances from Israeli representatives that the detained citizens were expected to be released and leave the country the same day.

Interception of Polish Activists

The incident occurred during the mission of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Organizers reported that Israeli forces seized vessels in international waters approximately 130 kilometers off the coast of Cyprus.

Among those detained were Łukasz Kozak, Agata Wisłocka, and Kareem Awad, a student at the Medical University of Wrocław who also holds British citizenship. Reports indicate that the entire Polish delegation participating in the mission was taken into custody.

Proposed Entry Ban for Itamar Ben-Gvir

The most significant political development is the formal request to ban Itamar Ben-Gvir from Polish territory. As one of the most radical figures in Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet, Ben-Gvir has faced international criticism for his inflammatory rhetoric regarding Palestinians and his support for aggressive military operations.

While Western nations have previously discussed limiting diplomatic contact with the minister, the Polish proposal represents one of the strongest diplomatic signals sent to an Israeli government member since the start of the conflict in October 2023.

Humanitarian Flotilla and Naval Blockade

The Global Sumud Flotilla departed from Marmaris, Turkey, with the stated goal of delivering aid and symbolically challenging the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza. Organizers claim that over 40 vessels were intercepted, with some allegedly coming under fire, though these details remain unconfirmed by the Israeli military.

Israel maintains that its naval blockade is consistent with international law and is a necessary security measure to prevent the smuggling of weapons to Hamas. Authorities have consistently reiterated that they will not allow foreign convoys to breach these maritime restrictions.
