Explosions on Russia‑linked Tankers off Turkey
Two tankers exploded on 28 November off Turkey’s coast near the Bosporus Strait. The vessels belong to Russia’s so‑called shadow fleet, a group of ships used to bypass international sanctions. Both ships are owned by Chinese operators and have previously sailed under the Gambian flag.
Kairos and Virat Under Western Sanctions
Both tankers, Kairos and Virat, are subject to Western sanctions. Fires broke out aboard the vessels. Kairos carried 25 people on board, with some sustaining injuries. Virat had 20 people aboard, none of whom suffered serious wounds.
Possible Mine Trigger Caused Explosions
Media reports first suggested that the ships may have triggered mines. A video recorded near the incident site shows a smoke plume rising into the air.
