An unknown number of passengers remain trapped after two high-speed trains derailed in Adamuz, province of Cordoba, in Andalusia. At least five people have died and several are injured, according to Spanish press agency EFE, citing Guardia Civil information. One of the trains was carrying 300 passengers.
Incident Sequence
The accident occurred on Sunday, January 18 in the evening. The Malaga-Puerta de Atocha train derailed at switches when entering track 1 in Adamuz and collided with the Puerta de Atocha-Huelva train on the adjacent track, which also derailed. Emergency services are working at the scene to free trapped passengers.
Firsthand Accounts
RTVE journalist Salvador Jiménez, who was on one of the trains, described the moment of impact as resembling an earthquake. According to his account, passengers used emergency hammers to open doors and windows before evacuating the train.
Emergency Response
Regional leader Juanma Moreno expressed concern about the serious railway accident, confirming that rescue services and logistical support have been dispatched to assist. Due to the accident, high-speed train traffic between Madrid and Andalusia has been suspended.
