Tensions Rise in Budapest: Magyar Defends Foreign Minister Against Fidesz Attacks

Following Anita Orban’s claims that past corruption cost Hungary EU funds, former ministers from Viktor Orban’s government launched an open letter, prompting Prime Minister Peter Magyar to label them anonymous mafiosi.

The Open Letter Against the Foreign Minister

Former ministers under Viktor Orban published an open letter on Fidesz social media channels targeting Anita Orban, the current Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. The letter follows her remarks at the Globsec conference in Prague, where she attributed the loss of EU funds to corruption during the previous administration.

The authors, who served alongside the minister during her tenure as energy security envoy from 2010 to 2015, accused her of hypocrisy. They claim she never reported corruption while serving in the previous government and now uses “baseless propaganda” to justify her current political position.

Magyar Retaliates Against Former Fidesz Officials

Prime Minister Peter Magyar responded by calling the letter “cowardly” and branding its anonymous authors as traitors. He argued that the individuals criticizing the current administration are the same people who allegedly betrayed the nation for years by prioritizing foreign interests and engaging with Russian hackers.

Magyar directly addressed Viktor Orban, challenging the former prime minister to step forward personally. He urged him to stop hiding behind anonymous accusations and instead take direct responsibility for his actions before the Hungarian people.

Anita Orban: A Change in System, Not Principles

In response to the controversy, the Foreign Minister stated that she has not changed, but the system she was once part of has deteriorated. She observed a shift where professionalism was replaced by personal loyalty and the pursuit of privilege over national interests.

Anita Orban emphasized that the fundamental issue remains loyalty to Hungary rather than to a political party. She affirmed her commitment to serving the country in a way that allows her to remain true to her professional integrity.
