The New Left is set to formally nominate MP Daria Gosek-Popiołek for the Krakow mayoral race this Monday, aiming to avoid past internal conflicts by securing support from regional party structures.
Formalizing the Candidacy
Włodzimierz Czarzasty, leader of the New Left, scheduled a formal decision regarding the party’s mayoral candidate for Monday, June 8. Sources within the party confirm that Daria Gosek-Popiołek is the sole candidate currently being considered for the Krakow race.
The delay in an official presentation stems from the party’s desire to ensure approval from the Małopolska Regional Council. By securing this mandate, Czarzasty aims to avoid the internal discord that followed the party’s previous unilateral decision to appoint Maria Klaman as deputy mayor.
Public Hints and Political Context
Ahead of the official announcement, Gosek-Popiołek posted a message on social media stating, “It is time to play the most important game.” Local media reports confirm this move aligns with the party’s internal strategy.
Gosek-Popiołek, currently an independent MP after leaving the Razem party in October 2024, is viewed as a strong candidate due to her successful performance in the 2023 parliamentary elections.
The Broader Electoral Landscape
The field for the early Krakow mayoral election is becoming increasingly crowded. Other confirmed candidates include Michał Drewnicki (PiS), Grażyna Zofia Świat, Bartosz Bocheńczak (Konfederacja), Michał Klimek (Konfederacja Korony Polskiej), Marian Banaś, and Marianna Schreiber.
Aleksandra Owca of the Razem party has also announced her bid. Meanwhile, the Civic Coalition (KO) is still weighing its options, with potential discussions regarding a joint candidate with the Polish People’s Party (PSL).
Interim Governance
Stanisław Kracik will serve as the acting commissioner until a new mayor is elected. Under the Election Code, early elections must take place within 90 days following the announcement of the referendum results.
