PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński is currently undergoing a multi-hour witness interrogation at the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw regarding the “Two Towers” real estate development project involving the Srebrna company.
Interrogation Proceedings
Jarosław Kaczyński has been at the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office since 10:00 AM, providing testimony as a witness in an ongoing investigation. Prosecutor Piotr Antoni Skiba confirmed that the session is being held with periodic breaks, with proceedings expected to conclude by 7:00 PM.
The PiS leader is accompanied by two legal counsels. Prosecutor Skiba noted that Kaczyński was informed of his right to refuse to answer questions, a right he has not exercised. The atmosphere inside the interrogation room was described by the spokesperson as relatively calm.
Background of the Srebrna Investigation
The investigation concerns the failed plan to construct two skyscrapers on a plot in Warsaw owned by Srebrna, a company linked to the Law and Justice (PiS) party. Authorities are examining allegations that Austrian businessman Gerald Birgfellner was misled, resulting in a significant financial loss.
The current probe was initiated in February 2023 following an audit of proceedings conducted during the 2016-2023 period. Previous attempts to investigate the matter under the former administration were discontinued, a decision that faced significant legal challenges from Birgfellner’s representatives.
Legal Disputes and Controversies
The investigation also covers a specific dispute regarding a 50,000 PLN payment. Gerald Birgfellner previously testified that he was pressured to provide these funds to a priest serving on the board of the foundation that owns Srebrna. Kaczyński has consistently denied wrongdoing, labeling the investigation as politically motivated.
In 2019, the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office refused to open an investigation, citing a lack of documented costs and formal contracts. However, following an audit by the National Prosecutor’s Office, officials determined that the case required further examination, leading to the current formal proceedings.
