Polish Storm Chasers have confirmed an IF2-rated tornado hit Balcarzowice in the Strzelce County on Saturday, causing significant structural damage to buildings and forests after several storm cells merged into a supercell.
Evolution of the Storm
Initial storms emerged between Friday night and Saturday morning near Szczecin and Poznań, followed by activity near Leszno by early afternoon. Around 4:00 PM, multiple storm cells merged, forming a powerful supercell.
The system reached the Strzelce County in the Opole region by 5:00 PM, bringing intense rainfall and high winds. Between 5:15 PM and 5:25 PM, a tornado struck the village of Balcarzowice.
Tornado Intensity and Damage
According to Igor Laskowski of the Polish Storm Chasers, the event was an IF2-rated tornado. On the six-degree intensity scale, IF2 denotes wind speeds between 121 and 165 km/h, capable of ripping off roofs and causing major structural damage.
Emergency response efforts involved 55 fire brigade units responding to 28 incidents. Data indicates 18 buildings were damaged, including 11 residential homes; two of these are currently uninhabitable. Fortunately, there were no fatalities or injuries reported.
Assessment and Future Warnings
The Voivode’s commission is set to begin evaluating damages on Monday to initiate formal aid procedures for those affected. Park Renardów in Strzelce Opolskie also sustained significant tree damage.
Meanwhile, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued level I weather warnings for northeastern Poland, including the Warmian-Masurian, Masovian, and Podlaskie regions, valid until Sunday evening. Additional warnings for heavy rain and storms are in effect for southwestern and southern Poland from Sunday night through Monday afternoon.
