Trump Retaliates with Tariffs on European Countries Demanding Greenland

President Trump announces 10-25% tariffs on EU allies starting February 2026, tied to Greenland acquisition.

Trump Announces Tariffs on European Allies

United States President Donald Trump announced on Saturday, January 17th, the introduction of additional tariffs on goods imported to the USA from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland. From February 1, 2026, the rate will be 10%, and from June 1, it will increase to 25%.

The decision was announced in a post published on the Truth Social platform and – as Trump announces – will remain in effect until an agreement is reached for the “complete and final purchase of Greenland” by the United States.

Denmark to Get Revenge

Trump has long been convinced that Greenland is of key importance to the security of the USA and “the world as a whole.”

“For many years we have funded Denmark, all countries of the European Union and other states, without imposing tariffs or any other forms of compensation. Now, after centuries, the time has come for Denmark to repay us – the stake is world peace!” – wrote Donald Trump in a statement.

In his statement, he stated that China and Russia are interested in the island, and Denmark – in his opinion – is not able to defend it effectively. “Currently they have two dog sleds as protection, one of which was added recently. Only the United States of America under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump can play this game and with great success! No one would touch this sacred land, especially when the stake is the national security of the United States and the entire world” – added Trump.

The US President critically commented on the decision of European countries to send soldiers to Greenland, describing these actions as “a very dangerous game.”
