U.S. Treasury Warns Europe: “Retaliation Would Be Very Irrational”

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warns European countries against retaliatory measures over Greenland dispute at Davos Forum.

Europe Considering Retaliation Against U.S.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed concerns about potential European retaliatory measures against the United States over the Greenland dispute. “I think that would be very irrational,” Bessent stated during a conversation with journalists at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Bessent: Trust Trump on Greenland

The American Treasury Secretary appealed to European countries to believe in President Donald Trump’s good intentions regarding Greenland. Although Bessent had not contacted European officials due to being on a trip, he emphasized that he had spoken with President Trump and “there is clearly a lot to be settled.” “I believe everyone should believe the president on his word,” he added.

U.S. Imposes Tariffs on European Nations

President Donald Trump announced that starting February 1, the U.S. will impose 10% tariffs on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Finland, which have decided to send troops to Greenland. Trump indicated tariffs could increase to 25% in subsequent months.

Europe May Use “Trade Bazooka” Against U.S.

Media reports suggest the European Union could use a “trade bazooka” against the U.S., referring to a EU instrument against economic coercion from third countries. French President Emmanuel Macron stated he would request activation of this instrument if Trump does not retract his threats.

“If Greenland Becomes U.S. Territory, There Will Be No Conflict”

In an NBC interview, Bessent reiterated Trump’s position that the U.S. should control Greenland for security reasons. He claimed Europe’s weakness necessitates U.S. control of Greenland to maintain international stability. Bessent argued the takeover would be crucial in the geopolitical competition between the U.S., Russia, and China. He noted that if Greenland is attacked, the U.S. would still be drawn into conflict due to NATO guarantees, concluding: “If Greenland becomes part of the United States, there will be no conflict.”
