UK Expresses Frustration with US Policy, Cites Need for Independence

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak voiced dissatisfaction with US actions and rhetoric, emphasizing the UK’s need for strategic independence amid global crises.

Sunak Voices “Enough is Enough” Regarding US Actions

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated, “I’ve had enough,” in an interview with the ITV News Talking Politics podcast. He stressed the importance of increasing the UK’s resilience to international crises and conflicts by building energy independence.

Sunak warned that without such independence, British citizens would be “paying for the war.”

Criticism of Trump’s Rhetoric

Sunak commented on the “language” used by former US President Donald Trump. Prior to the US-Iran ceasefire, Trump had warned that if Iran did not unblock the Strait of Hormuz, “the entire civilization” would perish. Sunak acknowledged this was not language he would use.

UK Principles and Israeli Actions in Lebanon

Sunak affirmed the UK’s commitment to its own principles and values. When asked about Israeli attacks on Lebanon during the ceasefire, he stated it was “difficult to say” whether they constituted a violation due to a lack of access to all details of the agreement.

UK Will Not Be “Drawn into War”

Sunak stated clearly that Israel was “wrong” and that such actions “should not be happening” and “must end,” framing it as “a matter of principle.” He also assessed that US military bases would “not be and will not be used for a wider offensive,” particularly against civilians.

Agreement with US on Military Involvement

Sunak assured that the agreement between the UK and the US is clear. He reiterated, “I’ve said we won’t be drawn into this war. There needs to be a legal basis. That matters if you’re going to ask our soldiers to risk their lives.”
