Ukraine has warned Poland that proposed legislation by Karol Nawrocki to equate Banderist symbols with Nazi and communist imagery could provoke a strong backlash from Kyiv.
Ukraine Issues Caution to Poland
On Monday, August 25, Karol Nawrocki announced a legislative initiative to classify Banderist symbols alongside Nazi and communist symbols in Poland’s criminal code. Ukrainian media reported that Kyiv authorities have already contacted Polish officials on the matter. Citing diplomatic sources, Ukraine cautioned Poland that Nawrocki’s proposal might lead to a negative reaction within the Ukrainian community in Poland.
Potential Consequences of Nawrocki’s Proposal
According to the European Truth Informer, Ukraine is analyzing the legal implications of decisions that could impact Ukrainian citizens in Poland. The source warned that politically charged moves to equate Ukrainian symbols with Nazism or communism may incite anti-Ukrainian sentiment and necessitate a response from Kyiv. Interfax-Ukraine echoed similar concerns, emphasizing the potential societal fallout.
Vołodymyr Viatrovych: Resemblance to Putin’s Vision
Vołodymyr Viatrovych, a member of Ukraine’s Supreme Council and former head of Ukraine’s IPN, criticized Nawrocki’s approach. Viatrovych stated on Facebook, “The Banderist ideology includes three key theses: win the Ukrainian state or die fighting for it; national freedom and human freedom; reliance on one’s own strength. Nawrocki sees this as similar to Nazism. I see his vision as akin to Putin’s, which labels all Ukrainian elements as denazification.”
“Stop Banderism” – Nawrocki’s Stance Explained
Karol Nawrocki detailed his proposal during a press briefing, stating, “To eliminate Russian propaganda and establish a genuine Polish-Ukrainian partnership based on mutual respect and sensitivity, I propose including the phrase ‘Stop Banderism’ in the legislation. This would involve equating Banderist symbols with those of German Nazism and Soviet communism, alongside revising the Institute of National Memory Act and the Polish Commission for the Prosecution of the Crime of Treason.”
