US Announces Deep Cuts to Military Assets Committed to NATO

During a meeting in Brussels on May 22, Pentagon official Alexander Velez-Green informed NATO representatives that the US intends to significantly reduce its military hardware contributions to the Alliance.

Scope of the US Military Reduction

According to Der Spiegel, the US plans to reduce its NATO-allied strategic bombers and refueling aircraft readiness. The number of American fighter jets assigned to the Alliance is set to decrease by one-third.

Furthermore, discussions included reducing the number of destroyers committed to NATO operations and halting the provision of US submarines. Europeans are expected to procure their own reconnaissance drones moving forward.

Strategic Shift and European Responsibilities

While the US delegation noted that nuclear deterrence in Europe will remain, Der Spiegel reports that these plans constitute a major NATO breakthrough, exceeding European expectations. There is immense pressure on European nations to rapidly fill these capability gaps, effectively shifting the burden of conventional continental defense onto them.

The US maintains that these changes are not intended to remove American troops from Europe, but rather to grant Washington greater flexibility in the event of a conflict in the Indo-Pacific region.

Political Implications and Upcoming Deadlines

Handelsblatt notes that US foreign policy under Donald Trump has shifted from traditional alliances toward influencing the domestic policies of democratic states, with an aim to strengthen right-wing parties and weaken the European Union.

Washington expects European nations to propose plans for filling capability gaps by early June. The US intends to present a new burden-sharing framework at the upcoming July NATO summit in Ankara.
