Vance Accuses EU of Election Interference During Hungary Visit

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance rallied support for Viktor Orbán in Budapest, alleging EU interference in Hungary’s upcoming parliamentary elections.

Vance Backs Orbán, Criticizes EU

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance accused “Brussels bureaucrats” of attempting to “destroy the Hungarian economy” and interfering in the upcoming elections because of their opposition to Orbán. He stated the situation represents one of the worst instances of foreign interference he has seen.

During a rally, Vance urged Hungarians to “rise up” against the “tyranny” of bureaucrats and choose Orbán in the upcoming vote, prompting chants of “Viktor, Viktor, Viktor!” He also praised Orbán’s leadership and the development of Hungary under his guidance.

Magyar Responds to Vance’s Visit

Peter Magyar, a leading opposition figure, stated that no foreign country should interfere in Hungarian elections, asserting that Hungary’s history is written by Hungarians, not Washington, Moscow, or Brussels. He made the statement on Facebook, adding “Five days left!” in reference to the April 12th elections.

Magyar also assured that, if his party wins, the United States will remain a key partner for Hungary, both as a NATO ally and economic partner. He cited Vance’s statement that the U.S. will work with whoever wins the election, but noted Vance also predicted Orbán’s victory.

Trump’s Support for Orbán

During a conference call at the rally, Vance connected with former President Donald Trump, who expressed his strong support for Orbán. Trump stated, “I’m a fan of Viktor, I’m on his side, the United States is with him.”

Polls Indicate Tight Race

Recent polls show a close race between Magyar’s Tisza movement and Orbán’s Fidesz party. Median’s March poll gave Tisza 58% support among decided voters, while Fidesz had 35%. A 21 Research Center poll from April 1st showed Tisza at 56% and Fidesz at 37%. Government-affiliated polls suggest a smaller lead for Fidesz.

Vance’s Visit Details

Vice President Vance arrived in Budapest on April 7th for a two-day visit intended to show support for Orbán ahead of the parliamentary elections. He held a joint press conference with Orbán and addressed a crowd in the capital.
