Warsaw prosecutors probe taxi driver suspected of orchestrating dozens of staged traffic accidents to claim insurance compensation.
Prosecutor’s Office Takes Over Case
The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw has taken over an investigation from the Warsaw-Ochota District Prosecutor’s Office concerning the fraudulent claiming of compensation. The case involves misleading authorities about circumstances of events that formed the basis for insurance payments and fraudulently obtaining money from insurance contracts. The alleged offenses fall under Article 286 § 1 of the Penal Code.
Taxi Driver at Center of Investigation
A taxi driver – a Ford Focus driver from Warsaw – has become a key focus of the investigation. According to findings, he participated in dozens of unusual traffic incidents, primarily in the area of the “Radosława” roundabout. Prosecutors have revealed a shocking balance of 65 collisions in just four years.
Staged Accidents at Strategic Intersections
Information gathered so far indicates that individuals involved in the case registered vehicles in their own names, which were then used to provoke collisions. Since early 2020, the suspects are believed to have participated in approximately 65 traffic incidents across various cities in Poland. The modus operandi involved identifying critical locations such as roundabouts or equivalent intersections where drivers do not exercise sufficient caution, and deliberately causing collisions with their participation.
Insurance Companies Detect Pattern
According to insurance companies, in many cases, reported damages concerned the same vehicle components, which became increasingly damaged with each subsequent incident. Compensation was paid from the liability insurance policies of the collision perpetrators.
Justice Minister Takes Interest
The prosecutor’s office notes that proceedings in the case are ongoing and include establishing the full number of incidents and all individuals who may have participated in the scheme. The case has drawn the attention of Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek, who has appealed to prosecutors to thoroughly analyze such cases, including that of the former Ford Focus taxi driver.
