WHO Chief Praises Polish Captain Following Hantavirus Outbreak on MV Hondius

After a harrowing hantavirus outbreak left three dead on the cruise ship MV Hondius, the vessel has been disinfected in Rotterdam, with Captain Jan Dobrogowski set to return to Poland.

The End of a Frightening Voyage

An outbreak of hantavirus forced the evacuation of passengers from the MV Hondius near the Canary Islands, leaving 25 crew members and two medical personnel on board. The cruise ship arrived in Rotterdam on Monday, May 18, for professional decontamination.

Most crew members have already completed a 42-day quarantine. While the vessel’s disinfection was scheduled to conclude on Friday, May 22, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed that Captain Jan Dobrogowski will disembark one day later.

Leadership Under Pressure

The WHO chief commended Captain Dobrogowski for his conduct during the crisis, noting that the Pole has remained symptom-free to date. Ghebreyesus expressed deep gratitude for Dobrogowski’s leadership in guiding the ship and its passengers to safety through a traumatic journey.

To date, 12 cases of hantavirus have been confirmed, resulting in three deaths, with no new fatalities reported since May 2. All individuals aboard remain under strict medical supervision and quarantine protocols.

Background of the Commander

Captain Dobrogowski, a graduate of the Gdynia Maritime University, is a seasoned sailor with over two decades of experience. He began his career in 1999 on the sailing ship Zawisza Czarny, where he completed two voyages around Cape Horn before becoming captain at the age of 26.

Understanding the Hantavirus Threat

Hantaviruses are primarily transmitted via contact with rodents, their urine, feces, or saliva. While human-to-human transmission is rare, it has been documented by researchers.

Symptoms typically manifest one to eight weeks after exposure, including fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal distress. Medical treatment currently focuses on managing respiratory, cardiac, and renal complications.
