Zakharova Demands U.S. Troop Withdrawal from Europe, Warns Against Polish Deployment

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has publicly demanded the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Europe, specifically labeling the potential relocation of American troops to Poland as an unacceptable escalation.

Moscow’s Demand for U.S. Withdrawal

Maria Zakharova stated that Russia is closely monitoring American military reconfiguration in Europe. She argued that withdrawing U.S. armed forces from European soil would be a rational and long-overdue step toward stabilizing the military-political situation, which she claims is currently unbalanced due to NATO’s actions.

The spokesperson expressed strong opposition to the prospect of moving U.S. bases from countries deemed less trustworthy to those in Central and Eastern Europe, such as Poland. Zakharova warned that such a shift would force Russia to adopt necessary military-technical countermeasures and would lead to a qualitative escalation of tensions across the continent.

NATO’s Stance on Russian Aggression

Contrary to Zakharova’s claims, NATO officials maintain that current instability stems from Russia’s actions, including the ongoing full-scale war in Ukraine and hybrid attacks on European nations. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte noted that the war is brutal, destructive, and closer than many perceive.

Rutte emphasized that Moscow is conducting an aggressive campaign involving cyberattacks, sabotage, and disinformation. He cited incidents such as damaged undersea cables, explosions on railway lines, and arson as part of a deliberate effort to destabilize societies, asserting that the presence of American troops is a necessary response to these threats.

U.S. Troop Presence in Poland

The status of U.S. military deployment in Poland remains in flux following conflicting reports regarding troop movements. While recent discussions have involved potential shifts in personnel numbers, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that efforts are underway to move toward a permanent American presence.

Currently, there are approximately 10,000 U.S. soldiers stationed in Poland, with the vast majority operating on a rotational basis. The Polish government maintains that all ongoing planning activities are directed toward increasing the number of American troops in the country.
