Following reports that former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro has relocated to the United States after months of seeking international protection in Hungary, Polish authorities are now pursuing formal extradition proceedings.
Status of the Investigation
Zbigniew Ziobro, who spent several months in Hungary under international protection, confirmed his arrival in the United States on May 10. The former minister faces serious allegations, including leading an organized criminal group and abusing his office to facilitate illegal subsidies from the Justice Fund, interfering in tender processes, and favoring unqualified entities.
Ministry Inquiries into U.S. Presence
Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek stated that the government has reached out to the Polish Foreign Ministry and the U.S. Ambassador to determine Ziobro’s legal status and the circumstances of his entry into the country. Authorities are currently investigating reports that Ziobro may be working as a media correspondent, raising questions about potential assistance provided to him.
Extradition and Diplomatic Pressure
The Ministry of Justice has finalized an extradition request and is awaiting a court decision regarding temporary arrest. Officials emphasized that despite the strategic alliance with the United States, Poland remains committed to prosecuting high-level corruption and will investigate whether Ziobro is receiving any form of political protection.
