A climate change denial conference with Vice-Marshal Krzysztof Bosak’s patronage was held at the Polish Sejm.
Conference Premise and Speaker Criticism
A conference titled “Does Man Influence Climate Change?” was held in the Sejm, featuring speakers who deny human impact on climate, contradicting scientific consensus. Dr. Mariusz Błochowiak, president of the Ordo Medicus foundation, opened the event, criticizing the funding of scientific research. He alleged that politicians control funding, pushing scientists to pursue “absurd” projects like CO2 capture, rather than critical studies.
Błochowiak claimed scientific consensus on climate change is driven by funded researchers, citing a Polish geologist who criticizes climate policies but remains silent due to funding tied to promoting CO2 as harmful. He proposed constitutional guarantees for independent scientists, stating that current science is “corrupted” in large part.
Geological Claims and Counterarguments
Dr. Stefan Uhlig, a geologist and author of “Climate Fraud,” argued that climate changes are natural, referencing historical events. He warned that colder periods cause droughts, famine, epidemics, and wars, stating, “Winter mortality is far higher than summer mortality. Cold kills, not heat.”
Uhlig claimed global warming isn’t occurring, citing Poland’s record low temperature of -41.2°C in 2023 and stating polar bear populations have tripled. However, this temperature was recorded in a specific, cold-trapping location, not representative of national averages. Polar bears are classified as vulnerable due to sea ice dependency.
Contested Speakers and Scientific Consensus
Dr. Tadeusz Wójcik, a chemist and former AWS MP, claimed that fossil fuels aren’t the driver of climate change, contradicting established science. He argued against a “global temperature” concept, questioning how averages are calculated across grids. Dr. Jan Kubicki, a physicist, presented research on the “saturation” of the greenhouse effect by CO2, awarded third place in the “Climate Nonsense of the Year” contest.
Kubicki’s work was criticized for relying on outdated, flawed models ignored re-emission effects, a key mechanism in greenhouse warming. He lamented his research dismissal, claiming it lacked substantive rebuttal. The contest’s organizers cited expert rebuttals, including from Oxford and Imperial College, emphasizing the greenhouse effect’s validity.
Sejm’s Stance on Academic Freedom
During discussion, Błochowiak alleged most scientists privately agree with critics but fear speaking out. Kubicki quipped, “Only we, the retirees, are free.” The Sejm’s Media Service confirmed the event used parliamentary space under Bosak’s initiative, stating: “This is an expression of freedom of speech. If he wanted to organize a conference on ‘Why the Earth is Flat and Australia Doesn’t Exist,’ he could.”
