Police conducted a mysterious operation in Sopot on January 14, possibly connected to the unsolved disappearance of Iwona Wieczorek.
Police Operation in Sopot
On Wednesday, January 14, police conducted activities on Polna Street in Sopot. According to trojmiasto.pl, officers in white protective suits that prevent trace elimination were present. A blue police tent and cameras recording the operation were also set up. Local media unsuccessfully attempted to obtain information about the police action for several hours. Only after technicians left the scene did the prosecutor’s office comment on the matter.
Investigation into Unsolved Murder from Years Ago
Spokesperson for the National Prosecutor’s Office Przemysław Nowak informed trojmiasto.pl that police “are conducting evidentiary activities in Sopot in connection with an unsolved murder from several years ago.” The work is conducted under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office. Nowak added that “these activities are to check if there are grounds to resume the discontinued proceedings.”
Speculation about Police Actions. Connection to Iwona Wieczorek’s Disappearance?
The spokesperson did not provide details about the investigation or police operation. Meanwhile, Sopot residents have speculated that the officers’ actions could be related to the disappearance of Iwona Wieczorek. In 2011, the proceedings in this case were officially discontinued. Nevertheless, the Lesser Poland branch of the National Prosecutor’s Office and police from Kraków continue to handle the case.
Iwona Wieczorek’s Disappearance
Iwona Wieczorek disappeared on the night of July 16-17, 2010. The 19-year-old was at a party in Sopot where she had an argument with friends. She decided to walk home to Gdańsk. Her trail ended at the entrance to the beach in Jelitkowo. Although media reports frequently claimed breakthroughs in the search for Iwona Wieczorek, authorities have still not clarified this case.
