A woman reported missing relatives in Chełmno on January 15, leading police to discover the bodies of a 31-year-old woman and her three children in carbon monoxide-poisoned apartment.
Missing Persons Report Leads to Discovery
On Thursday (January 15) around 5:00 PM, a woman came to police in Chełmno, concerned about lack of contact with a relative and her children’s absence from school since the beginning of the week. Police immediately dispatched a patrol to the location.
Upon entering the tenement building, officers smelled intense gas and called the fire department. Before even entering the apartment, measuring devices showed very high levels of carbon monoxide.
Four Victims Found in Apartment
After entering the apartment, police and firefighters discovered the bodies of four people: a 31-year-old woman and her three children aged 3, 11, and 12. Measurements taken showed carbon monoxide concentration exceeded 900 ppm.
Understanding Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon monoxide, commonly called “carbon monoxide,” is a highly toxic, colorless and odorless gas that is slightly lighter than air, allowing it to easily mix and spread. Potential sources in residential premises include fireplaces, gas water heaters, coal, gas or oil stoves, and gas kitchens.
