Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov calls the US interest in Greenland an “extraordinary situation” under international law.
Kremlin’s Stance on Greenland
On Friday (January 16), during a press conference, Dmitry Peskov was asked about Greenland and the United States’ interest in the island. He replied that it is an “extraordinary situation.” He described it as an extraordinary situation from the point of view of international law, noting that President Trump has stated international law is not his priority, so the situation is developing differently.
Russia’s View on Greenland’s Status
Dmitry Peskov reported that Moscow has heard statements from Denmark and Greenland. He added that they’ve also heard Washington is formulating a financial proposal to acquire Greenland in some form. Peskov emphasized that Moscow proceeds from the assumption that Greenland is under the jurisdiction of Copenhagen.
White House Envoy’s Mission
Jeff Landry, governor of Louisiana, has been appointed by Donald Trump as a special envoy for Greenland. In a Friday interview with Fox News, he stated that he believes an agreement can be reached in this matter. Landry said the President is serious and has clearly stated his conditions to Denmark, and now it’s up to Secretary of State Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance to finalize a deal. He also announced his intention to personally visit the island in March.
