National Council to decide on invalidated party chairman elections amid potential candidacy from founder Szymon Hołownia.
National Council Meeting
On Friday (January 16), Poland 2050 held its National Council. The main topic was the invalidated second round of elections for party chairman. The agenda included a speech by Szymon Hołownia and a decision regarding whether to repeat only the second round or the entire electoral process, according to MP Marcin Skonieczka.
Everything indicates that the National Council will also have to resolve the issue of electoral protests, make an interpretation of the statutes enabling continued fulfillment of duties until a new board takes office, and supplement the composition of the National Electoral Commission.
Hołownia Considers Running
If the party decides to repeat the entire electoral process, including candidate nominations, it would allow new candidates to run. According to TVN24, Szymon Hołownia wants to take advantage of this option and signaled during the National Council meeting his support for repeating the entire elections.
Hołownia also declared his willingness to run himself. As the founder of Poland 2050 and its current leader, he announced at the end of last year that he would not seek re-election as party chairman.
Party Members Oppose Hołownia’s Return
Wirtualna Polska spoke with several Poland 2050 members who were not positive about the idea of Hołownia remaining as party chairman. One interviewee stated that “in the party, no one is waiting for Szymon anymore.” Even activists who previously supported Hołownia do not want the former Sejm Marshal to remain as leader.
Some pointed to voters’ negative assessment of Hołownia’s secret meetings with PiS leaders. “People remember that, Hołownia has no future in politics,” a journalist heard. Others said the party leader had been criticized by other activists for forgetting who created the party with, not listening to MPs, and promoting Pełczyńska at others’ expense.
