Warsaw’s Grójecka-Wawelska Intersection to Undergo Major Reconstruction

Warsaw’s Road Management Authority has announced a tender for the redesign of the Grójecka, Wawelska, and Kopińska intersection on Ochota, aiming to improve traffic flow and safety.

Overhaul Planned for Key Ochota Intersection

The intersection of Grójecka, Wawelska, and Kopińska streets in Warsaw’s Ochota district will undergo reconstruction. The Warsaw Road Management Authority (ZDM) has announced a tender for the preparation of complete design documentation, with changes extending to a section of Grójecka Street up to Narutowicza Square.

The investment aims to improve traffic flow and safety for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and public transportation. The ZDM states the intersection is a major transport hub, and any signal failure can cause significant disruption and safety hazards.

Years of Need, Delayed by Tram Line Construction

Drogowcy (road workers) have identified the need for reconstruction for years, but progress was hindered by the need to coordinate with the construction of the tram line to Warsaw West Station, resulting in only maintenance work until now.

Project Timeline and Designer Selection

The procedure for selecting a designer has begun, with offers accepted until May 15th. The selected contractor will have 360 days to prepare the documentation, with the ZDM anticipating the reconstruction itself could begin in autumn 2027 or early 2028.

Key Changes: Dedicated Left Turns and Cycle Lanes

The most significant planned change is the creation of dedicated, grade-separated left turns, intended to streamline traffic flow and improve safety. The project also includes a comprehensive network of bicycle lanes connecting to Radomska, Pasteura, Kaliska, and Mochnackiego streets.

A bus lane on Grójecka Street towards the city center will be maintained as part of the plans.

Narutowicza Square Improvements and Safety Concerns

Changes will also extend towards Narutowicza Square, including the removal of the current turnaround at the square’s southern end due to the risky intersection with the tram tracks. The adjacent pedestrian crossing will be equipped with traffic lights.

A safety audit by the ZDM gave the location a safety rating of 2 on a scale of 0 to 5, classifying it as a priority area for improvement, along with crossings rated 0, 1, and some rated 2.

New Intersection and Turnaround at Mochnackiego Street

The changes will result in a new intersection of Grójecka and Mochnackiego streets, featuring a turnaround for traffic from the city center and a left turn onto Mochnackiego Street. A new pedestrian crossing will also be created to improve access to the tram stop towards Włochy.

Parallel Modernization of Narutowicza Square

Work has already begun on the modernization of Narutowicza Square, led by the Capital City Development Office in collaboration with Tramwaje Warszawskie (Warsaw Trams). The scope includes new surfaces, additional greenery, a green tram track, improved parking, accessibility for people with disabilities, and extended tram stops.

Completion of these works is planned for the end of 2026.

Comprehensive Changes for a Heavily Congested Area

The reconstruction of the Grójecka area and Narutowicza Square represents a major package of changes for one of Ochota’s most congested transport areas. Documentation for the Grójecka, Wawelska, and Kopińska intersection is being developed, while work on the square itself is already underway.
