Polish MP Punished for Displaying Swastika on Israeli Flag

Konrad Berkowicz, a Polish MP, received a salary reduction after displaying a modified Israeli flag with a swastika in the Sejm.

MP Berkowicz Sanctioned for Provocative Act

Konrad Berkowicz of the Konfederacja party faced repercussions for his actions during a debate on the Middle East conflict on April 14th. He accused Israel of using banned phosphorus bombs and committing genocide, comparing the nation to Nazi Germany.

Berkowicz displayed a printed image of an Israeli flag altered to feature a swastika instead of the Star of David, stating that is how the Israeli flag should look.

Maximum Penalty Imposed by Sejm Presidium

The Sejm Presidium decided to punish Berkowicz with the maximum penalty allowed: a deduction of half his salary for the next three months.

Sejm Marshal Clarifies Decision

Włodzimierz Czarzasty, the Sejm Marshal, confirmed signing the decision, emphasizing the punishment was primarily for using Nazi symbols within the parliamentary chamber. He stressed his opposition to the introduction of swastikas into the Polish Sejm.

Czarzasty also requested that the decision not be interpreted as a penalty for the content of Berkowicz’s speech itself, stating each individual is responsible for their own words.

Criminal Investigation Launched

The Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation into Berkowicz’s actions. They are assessing whether his conduct constitutes public defamation of a foreign state’s flag or inciting hatred based on national origin, ethnicity, or religion.

Reactions from Berkowicz and the Minister of Justice

Berkowicz stated he was prepared to face the consequences of his actions. Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek condemned the use of the swastika, calling it a symbol of a criminal ideology and demanding a firm response from the state.

Additional Complaint Filed

The Sejm Marshal also filed a separate complaint with the prosecutor’s office regarding potential criminal offenses committed by Berkowicz.
