A 49-year-old Lithuanian truck driver was sentenced to two years suspended imprisonment after crashing near Warsaw while nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit.
Trucker Crashes, Blocks Traffic
The incident occurred on the Konotopa interchange near Warsaw, on the connector between the S8 and S2 routes towards Chopin Airport. The truck driver collided with barriers and sound screens, creating a hazard for other road users.
The vehicle blocked the road after the collision, and its cargo spilled onto the roadway.
Driver Found to Be Intoxicated
Police determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol. Reports indicate a breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol content of almost three per mille.
The driver was arrested and taken into police custody.
Expedited Trial Results in Sentence
The case was referred to court under an expedited procedure. According to the Warsaw West County Police Headquarters, a verdict was reached within 48 hours of the driver’s arrest.
The Pruszków court sentenced the 49-year-old to two years imprisonment suspended for five years, a fine of 15,000 złoty, and a five-year ban on driving in Poland.
Rescue Operation and Infrastructure Damage
The accident appeared serious, with the driver trapped in the cab and requiring assistance from firefighters. The route towards the airport was blocked for several hours.
Traffic disruptions continued until the vehicle was removed and the damaged infrastructure was repaired. Police from the Warsaw West County Police Headquarters emphasize they will consistently use the expedited procedure for drunk drivers.
