US to Withdraw 5,000 Troops From Germany, Despite Trump’s Earlier Threats

The Pentagon announced the withdrawal of approximately 5,000 soldiers from Germany over the next 6-12 months, a move less extensive than President Trump previously indicated.

US Troop Reduction Confirmed

The Department of Defense has ordered the withdrawal of around 5,000 troops stationed in Germany, according to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell. The decision follows a thorough analysis of force posture in Europe, considering local needs and conditions.

This announcement comes after President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the number of American soldiers in Germany would be cut “by a lot more than 5,000.” He did not elaborate further at the time.

Context of the Decision

The reduction in US forces in Germany was announced following President Trump’s strong reaction to criticism of his policy towards Iran from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Chancellor Merz affirmed that despite disagreements regarding Iran, the United States remains Germany’s most important partner in NATO, and discussions about troop reductions have been ongoing for some time, unrelated to his dispute with Trump.

Impact on Vilseck, Bavaria

Reports from “Bild” and Bayerischer Rundfunk indicate that soldiers will be withdrawn from Vilseck, Bavaria. However, the base will remain operational, with at least 8,000 military personnel remaining.

The 2nd Cavalry Regiment of the US Army is permanently stationed in Vilseck’s Rose Barracks, equipped with Stryker armored vehicles. Approximately 5,000 American soldiers and over 10,000 Americans, including family members, reside in and around Vilseck.

Local Economic Concerns

Local authorities fear that a reduction in the US military presence will significantly harm Vilseck’s economy, which has long been dependent on American spending.

Vilseck’s mayor, Thorsten Graedler, described the potential withdrawal as “a serious blow” and stated that all possible efforts will be made to persuade the US to reconsider the decision.
