Tragedy in Kenya: 16 Schoolgirls Dead in Dormitory Fire

At least 16 students have died and dozens are injured following a devastating fire at a girls’ dormitory in Kenya, sparking anger among parents demanding the identification of victims.

Tension and Unrest at the Scene

The victims have yet to be identified, fueling frustration among parents gathered outside the ruined dormitory. Some parents confronted police officers at the scene, demanding to see the remains of their children, as reported by the Associated Press on Friday, May 29.

Official Investigation into Fire Safety

Education Minister Julius Ogamba stated that police are currently interviewing students to determine if the fire was caused by negligence. Authorities are investigating whether mandatory fire safety protocols were followed by the school.

Emergency Response and Casualty Reports

Initial police reports cited 10 fatalities, but the toll has risen. Commander Samuel Ndanyi noted the blaze began around 1:00 AM local time. Emergency services, including the Kenyan Red Cross, have been searching the wreckage.

The Kenyan Red Cross confirmed via X that their E-Plus Medical Services teams, ambulance crews, and psychosocial support personnel are on-site assisting survivors alongside local authorities.

Systemic Risks in Boarding Schools

Fires in Kenyan boarding schools are a recurring issue often attributed to the violation of safety standards, including overcrowding. Several similar incidents with high death tolls have been documented in recent years.
