A suspect killed seven people in Muscatine, Iowa, on Monday, June 1, before taking his own life when confronted by police officers along the Mississippi River.
Discovery of Victims
On Monday, June 1, at approximately 12:12 p.m. local time, emergency services discovered four deceased individuals inside a private residence. Shortly thereafter, officers located 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland on a path along the Mississippi River.
Confrontation and Death of the Suspect
During the encounter, the suspect took his own life. Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies confirmed that despite immediate attempts by officers and medical personnel to provide aid, McFarland was pronounced dead at the scene.
Additional Crime Scenes
Investigators subsequently discovered the bodies of two more men suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim was found in a separate residence, while the other was located at a nearby business establishment.
Motive and Investigation
Authorities believe the shootings stemmed from a family dispute and suspect that all victims were relatives of the deceased gunman. Chief Kies noted that the suspect had a prior criminal record, though specific details remain undisclosed as the investigation continues.

Expressing the gravity of the incident, Chief Kies told ABC News, “I am simply at a loss for words regarding this act of evil and what the perpetrator has done to our community.”
