ABW Arrests Three Poles on Charges of Espionage for Russia

The Internal Security Agency has detained three Polish men aged 48 to 62, suspected of gathering intelligence on NATO troop deployments and engaging in hybrid warfare activities for the Russian Federation.

Espionage and Hybrid Warfare Allegations

The Internal Security Agency (ABW) carried out the arrests following orders from the National Prosecutor’s Office in Białystok. Minister-coordinator of special services Tomasz Siemoniak confirmed that the suspects, all Polish citizens, have been placed in three-month pre-trial detention.

Investigators allege that the men were tasked with tracking the locations of NATO forces within Poland. Beyond intelligence gathering, they were reportedly responsible for creating and disseminating propaganda and disinformation, tactics consistent with Russian hybrid warfare strategies.

Ongoing Investigation into Potential Network

Minister Siemoniak stated that the investigation remains developmental as authorities work to determine if the suspects acted alone or as part of a broader intelligence network. The case highlights the increasing frequency of Russian efforts to exploit local citizens for reconnaissance and sabotage.

Strategic Security Risks

The arrests occur at a critical time for European security, as Poland remains a primary logistical hub for NATO support to Ukraine. Security experts have warned that Russian services are increasingly leveraging European nationals to monitor critical infrastructure and military movements, alongside efforts to destabilize social cohesion through disinformation.

Pattern of Russian Intelligence Activity

The ABW has reported an uptick in threats from Russian intelligence since 2022. Previous cases have involved the monitoring of railway lines and military warehouses, underscoring that Moscow’s strategy extends well beyond traditional espionage to include large-scale influence operations intended to weaken state institutions.
