Poland’s Internal Security Agency has arrested three individuals suspected of espionage for Russia, involving tasks ranging from reconnaissance of NATO troop deployments to sabotage and propaganda support for the war.
Three-Month Pre-Trial Detention
The District Court in Białystok has ordered a three-month pre-trial detention for all three suspects. Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak confirmed on X on Wednesday, May 20, that the investigation remains ongoing.
Intelligence and Sabotage Allegations
The Internal Security Agency (ABW) executed the arrests on May 12, with the investigation overseen by the National Prosecutor’s Office in Białystok. Prosecutors allege the suspects performed intelligence tasks for a Russian citizen linked to the FSB, including monitoring NATO troop movements in Poland.
The group reportedly underwent training in marksmanship and battlefield tactics as preparation for potential sabotage and diversionary activities.
Propaganda and Funding Operations
Authorities stated the suspects engaged in propaganda supporting Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Additionally, they were involved in collecting funds intended for the purchase of military equipment for the Russian army.
Denial of Charges
Following their questioning by prosecutors, the suspects have pleaded not guilty and provided statements. The charges of espionage against the security of the state carry a penalty of at least eight years to life imprisonment.
