Algeria: Double Suicide Bombing During Papal Visit

A double suicide bombing occurred Monday in Algeria’s Blida province while Pope Leo XIV is visiting the country, according to reports.

A double suicide bombing took place on Monday in the Blida province of northern Algeria during the visit of Pope Leo XIV, reported AFP news agency.

Sources confirmed to the agency, citing witness accounts, that there were “two incidents threatening security, of a terrorist nature.” Both suicide bombers died in the explosions, AFP added.

Possible Third Incident

The agency’s source indicated a possible third incident, which remains unconfirmed. The number of casualties has not yet been released.

AFP verified footage from Al-Bulayda, the main city in Blida province, showing two mutilated bodies. The videos were published hours after Pope Leo XIV arrived in Algeria for a historic visit.

Pope’s Location

On Monday, the Pope was in the capital city of Algiers, approximately 40 km from Al-Bulayda. On Tuesday, the second day of his visit, Leo XIV is in Annaba in the northeast of the country.

Initial Report Retraction

The African Union initially reported the double bombing but later retracted the information, stating it was based on reports not confirmed by official sources.

Recent Attacks

The last recorded suicide bombing in Algeria occurred in February 2020, targeting a military base in the south of the country. An Algerian soldier was killed, and the Islamic State group claimed responsibility, according to AFP.
