Biedronka, Lidl, and Aldi Raise Wages to Over 6,000 zł: Who Pays Best in Retail?

Polish discount retailers Biedronka, Lidl, and Aldi have increased wages to 6,000 zł and above, prompting a review of compensation across the sector in 2026.

Retail Wages Rise Amidst Competition

Several years ago, retail work was associated with minimum wage and high employee turnover. In 2026, the situation has changed, with wages at Biedronka, Lidl, and Aldi reaching up to 6,000 zł gross on entry-level positions, and managers earning over 9,000 zł.

Retail chains are increasing wages to attract and retain employees. This article examines where the highest earnings are currently found in the Polish retail market.

Factors Driving Wage Increases

Rising living costs, labor market pressures, and a higher minimum wage are forcing retail chains to revise their compensation structures. As a result, retail is becoming a more stable career choice for many Poles.

Minimum Wage as a Benchmark

Recently, the minimum wage served as the primary reference point. In 2026, it stands at 4,806 zł gross, automatically raising wages across the industry. Retail chains could not maintain previous wage levels, as the labor market demanded increases.

Base Pay Plus Incentives

Today, cashiers at popular discount stores earn significantly more than the minimum wage. Increasingly, compensation packages include bonuses and benefits, which substantially increase take-home pay. This model – base pay + bonuses + benefits – means the differences between networks are often smaller than they appear.

Lidl vs. Biedronka: A Comparison

Lidl and Biedronka are the two largest competing networks in the Polish market. While both announce wage increases, their strategies differ.

At Lidl, employees can expect:

Aldi Offers Competitive Wages

Aldi is a surprise leader in 2026, offering some of the highest rates, despite being less visible a few years ago. Employees can expect:

This represents a real advantage – not only in base pay, but in total compensation. As a result, Aldi is increasingly attracting employees from competitors.

Kaufland and Dino: Wage Disparities

The situation at Kaufland is more complex, with wage increases accompanied by a different employment structure, with greater emphasis on warehouses and management positions.

Dino Polska remains one of the less generous employers in comparison. Entry-level cashiers earn around 4,806 zł gross, equivalent to the minimum wage. This is due to the network’s focus on smaller towns, a different business model, and lower wage pressure.

Retail Wage Comparison – 2026

As of the second half of 2026, the differences between networks are best illustrated in the following comparison:

Network | Cashier (Gross) | Manager (Gross) | Bonuses/Benefits

Lidl | 5250–6000 zł | from 8500 zł | bonuses, company car

Biedronka | 5300–5650 zł (up to 5900) | from 7450 zł | monthly bonuses

Aldi | 5700–6450 zł | up to 9350 zł | bonuses up to 2500 zł, allowances

Kaufland | 5300–6200 zł | from 8000 zł | warehouse bonuses

Dino | approx. 4806 zł | lower range | limited

The comparison shows that Aldi and Lidl are competing for leadership, while Biedronka is catching up with its bonus system.

Beyond Base Pay: Bonuses and Benefits

Base pay is only part of the compensation package. Employees are increasingly looking at what they receive “on top of their salary.” Common additions include performance-based bonuses, allowances, and other benefits.

In practice, this means an employee with a lower base salary can earn more than someone with a higher salary if their store performs well.

Reasons for Rising Retail Wages

There are three simultaneous reasons for rising wages in popular retail chains:

Is Retail Work Worth It in 2026?

A few years ago, the answer would have been obvious. Today, it is more complex. Retail work offers job stability, increasingly higher wages, and benefits that were previously lacking. For many people – especially those without specialized education – it is one of the more accessible and predictable career paths.

However, the other side of the job, which is rarely mentioned in advertisements, still exists. It remains physically demanding work – long hours on your feet, unloading goods, time pressure, and customer interaction. Furthermore, despite wage increases, retail salaries remain significantly below the average wage in the enterprise sector. In the first quarter of 2026, the average was as high as 9278.19 zł gross, highlighting the gap compared to cashier and store employee wages.

Therefore, the answer to whether it is worthwhile depends on the point of reference – for some, it is a stable job with a rising salary, while for others, it is still a demanding job that does not match the best-paying industries.
