A candle exploded on a tomb in Konin’s cemetery Saturday night, sparking a blaze that spread up to ten metres, fire officials report.
Fire at Konin Cemetery
At about 22:25 on Saturday, 1 November, a candle on a tomb near Kolska Street in Konin, Greater Poland, detonated, setting the grave ablaze.
Explosion Drives Spread of Flames
According to witnesses, the candle “shot” and a pillar of fire rose roughly ten metres from the site before fire crews arrived.
Firefighters Response
The Konin Fire Protection Service arrived shortly after a call. Official press officer Sebastian Andrzejewski reported that four spruce trees were burning at the grave, and ash fell onto nearby parked cars.
Impact on Surrounding Area
Witnesses heard a second boom, possibly from a tomb slab cracking due to sudden cooling. The blaze was extinguished soon after.
