Conspiracy Theories Emerge After Washington Shooting Attempt

Following a shooting attempt during a White House Correspondents’ Association gala on April 25th, conspiracy theories alleging a “false flag” operation are circulating online.

Attempted Assassination and Initial Charges

On Monday, April 27th, a suspect was charged with three counts, including attempted murder of the president. The Washington Post reports there is no evidence supporting claims the attack was staged by the Trump administration.

“False Flag” Operation Theories Spread

Conspiracy theories quickly gained traction online, with some alleging President Trump orchestrated the attack due to declining approval ratings ahead of upcoming elections. Others suggest the incident was intended to bolster support for increased security around the White House, citing criticism of the current arrangements.

A History of Conspiracy in US Politics

The Washington Post notes that American politics is rife with conspiracy theories surrounding so-called “false flag” operations – events allegedly arranged to serve a political purpose. Supporters of these theories span the political spectrum, from Trump supporters to staunch critics of the president.

Approximately one-fifth of left-leaning and liberal influencers and politicians commenting on the attack used language aligning with conspiracy theories, according to the Washington Post.

Expert Analysis of Conspiracy Theories

Experts in disinformation suggest right-wing conspiracy theories signal waning support for Trump within the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement and reflect animosity towards the president from the left. They also highlight a natural human need to understand crisis situations when reliable information is scarce.

White House Dismisses Conspiracy Theories

“Anyone who thinks President Trump staged his own assassination attempts is a complete idiot,” stated White House spokesperson Davis Ingle.

Trump’s Role in Fueling Conspiracy Theories

CNN reported last week that “the monster of conspiracy theories, fed by U.S. President Donald Trump, may now turn against him.” The outlet asserts that no contemporary politician has contributed more to the spread of conspiracy theories than President Trump.

Past Conspiracy Theories Promoted by Trump

Over the years, Trump has promoted conspiracy theories regarding former President Barack Obama’s birthplace and the “stolen” 2020 election. CNN noted that few prominent Trump allies have publicly distanced themselves from him, with those who have done so originating from more conspiratorial circles within his base.

CNN specifically mentioned Marjorie Taylor Greene and Tucker Carlson as examples of figures increasingly promoting theories against Trump among their audiences.

Emerging Theories and Concerns

The theory of a staged assassination attempt on Trump in Butler in 2024 has gained traction, alongside claims that Trump is controlled by Israel and even that he may be the “antichrist.” While lacking evidence, these theories are gaining popularity on social media, potentially concerning Trump.

Details of the Shooting Incident

The shooting occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association gala at the Hilton hotel in Washington on Saturday, April 25th. President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and other cabinet members were evacuated during the live televised event.

The suspect, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, was armed with a shotgun, pistol, and knives. He opened fire on security personnel who then apprehended him before he could reach the event attendees.
