Polish magazine Newsweek’s latest issue cover, showcasing journalist Bogdan Rymanowski, has ignited an online backlash over its provocative language and alleged promotion of anti‑science views.
Cover Sparks Online Debate
Newsweek published a cover for its new issue featuring journalist Bogdan Rymanowski. The tagline, “Brednie u Rymanowskiego,” along with text that invites anti‑vaccination, anti‑scientific conspiracy theorists, and promoters of nonsense, sparked criticism. Viewers questioned whether the journalist truly believes the conspiracists or merely uses them to attract clicks and money.
The cover references an interview with Professor Grażyna Cichosz that appeared on Rymanowski’s YouTube channel, amassing over two million views. The interview included statements that challenged prevailing principles of healthy nutrition, drawing sharp criticism from specialists who accused the professor of promoting views contrary to current scientific knowledge.
Rymanowski’s Response on X
In a post on platform X, Rymanowski stated: “1. Freedom of speech—either it exists or it doesn’t. 2. Everyone deserves to be heard. No ‘police‑thinkers’ can dictate whom a journalist can or cannot invite. 3. I believe in my viewers’ ability to think independently and draw conclusions.” He added that “I’m just getting started.”
Media Criticism of Responsibility
Demagog responded that freedom of speech does not absolve journalists of responsibility. They argued that a journalist’s role extends beyond reporting to fact‑checking and removing harmful or false content. When platforms allow misinformation to proliferate—especially content that could affect health or life—this is deemed inappropriate and irresponsible.
Public Comments and Broader Debate
Krzysztof Stanowski of the Zero Channel described the cover as “absurdly meaningless” and said Rymanowski is now “more significant than Newsweek.” Konrad Piasecki of TVN24 warned that “freedom of speech should not mean an authority can proclaim facts without confrontation with evidence or respect for scientific knowledge.” Szymon Jadczakz of Wirtualna Polska added that “from this freedom, people with authority die.”
Opinion columnist Marek Mikołajczyk of the Dziennik Gazety Prawnej criticised the cover’s text for being weak. He argued that instead of addressing the harmfulness of the controversial statements made in the interview, the publication merely asked readers “what do you think of Bogdan Rymanowski?” and questioned whether that was appropriate material for a cover.
