Following President Zelenskyy’s move to honor a military unit, Law and Justice (PiS) MP Przemysław Czarnek has demanded a suspension of Polish aid and the revocation of Zelenskyy’s Order of the White Eagle.
Calls for Withdrawing Support
Karol Nawrocki, head of the Institute of National Remembrance, announced his intention to propose revoking President Zelenskyy’s Order of the White Eagle. Przemysław Czarnek endorsed this stance during a meeting with Gdańsk residents on May 29.
Czarnek urged the government to adopt “radical measures,” stating that Poland should cease assistance to Ukraine unless the decision is reversed. He emphasized that future aid must be contingent upon the Ukrainian government honoring the memory of Poles murdered by OUN-UPA.
Comparison to Nazi Symbols
Czarnek likened the Ukrainian president’s decision to Germany naming a military unit near the Polish border after the NSDAP or the SS. He asserted that Ukrainian authorities and President Zelenskyy have lost the moral authority to look at themselves in the mirror.
Differing Perspectives from Ukraine
Prof. Volodymyr Viatrovych, former head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, argued that Zelenskyy’s decision is unrelated to Poland or the Polish people. He cautioned that Nawrocki’s move to strip the Ukrainian president of a Polish order could damage bilateral relations.
