Following a six-vehicle collision in Łomianki, Poland, two men have been charged, with the driver accused of drinking a liter of vodka beforehand.
Tragic Crash and Initial Charges
Following a tragic accident on DK7 in Łomianki, investigators have brought charges against two men who were detained. The prosecutor’s office alleges that the Audi driver had consumed alcohol, violated two court-ordered driving bans, and left the scene of the accident.
The accident, involving six vehicles, occurred on April 12th, before 6 PM, on national road number 7 in Łomianki, on the overpass above the intersection of Brukowa and Kolejowa streets. Two people traveling in a Toyota – a 19-year-old and a 15-year-old – died in the collision, and the car’s 20-year-old driver was hospitalized in critical condition with a poor prognosis.
Details of the Collision
According to Prosecutor Piotr Antoni Skiba, the Audi driver, Patryk R., was traveling at high speed towards Warsaw. He sideswiped a Toyota while attempting to overtake other vehicles on the overpass. The impact caused the Toyota to become airborne, roll onto the opposite lane, and collide with four other vehicles.
The Toyota then struck four cars – an Audi, BMW, Toyota, and Honda – on the opposite lane, overturning. Two passengers in the Toyota died at the scene, and the driver was transported to the hospital. Another participant in the event also received on-site assistance.
Driver’s Alcohol Consumption and Prior Bans
The driver of the Audi fled the scene immediately after the accident. The following day, on Monday, police arrested two men – a 44-year-old believed to be the driver and a 34-year-old believed to be a passenger – around 3:30 AM. Both were under the influence of alcohol, registering approximately 0.5 per mille in breathalyzer tests. They were charged on Tuesday.
Prosecutors state the Audi driver had consumed a liter of vodka around 2 PM before driving. He already had two prior court-ordered driving bans.
Previous Convictions and Additional Charges
One of the bans was issued following a 2023 conviction by the Warsaw Żoliborz District Court for driving under the influence. He received a sentence of restriction of liberty, later converted to imprisonment, and a five-year driving ban.
Another conviction against Patryk R. occurred in 2026 for a traffic offense after failing to stop for a police check. He received a suspended prison sentence and another five-year driving ban. The Łomianki tragedy occurred two months later.
During a search of Patryk R.’s residence, investigators found a small amount of marijuana. He faces three charges: causing a fatal traffic accident while under the influence of alcohol, fleeing the scene and failing to provide assistance, violating a court-ordered driving ban, and possession of narcotics. The second detainee has been charged with failing to provide assistance to those involved. The investigation is ongoing, and prosecutors will request a three-month arrest warrant for both men.
