Drone Explodes in Latvian Lake Near Russian Border

An unidentified drone crashed and exploded in Lake Dridza in southeastern Latvia on Saturday morning, marking the latest mysterious aerial incident near the Russian border in recent weeks.

The Incident in Latgale

The Latvian State Security Service (VDD) was alerted on Saturday morning after residents reported a drone falling into Lake Dridza in the Kraslava district. The aircraft exploded upon impact with the water.

No injuries were reported. The lake is located in the Latgale region, approximately 60 kilometers from the Russian border and near the border with Belarus.

Ongoing Search Operations

Authorities have recovered debris believed to be from an unmanned aerial vehicle. Search operations are currently underway across a wide area, involving police, firefighters, and military personnel.

Officials have urged residents to avoid the site and report any additional debris found in the area immediately.

A History of Aerial Incursions

This is not the first drone incident in the region. On May 7, a group of drones entered Latvian airspace, with one striking an oil warehouse in Rezekne.

Following that event, reports noted the incident had political repercussions, including the resignation of the Minister of Defense and the Prime Minister.

GPS Spoofing and Russian Tactics

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs suggests Russia is intentionally redirecting Ukrainian drones toward Baltic states. Moscow has accused these nations of allowing their airspace to be used for attacks on Russia, a claim rejected by all parties involved.

According to The Telegraph, Russia utilizes a dual-tactic of jamming and spoofing to hijack drones. By blinding GPS receivers with high-power noise, the signal is replaced with false data that tricks the drone into navigating westward into NATO airspace.

A powerful transmitter located in the Kaliningrad exclave is believed to be at the center of this network, operating continuously to disrupt GPS signals over the Baltic Sea.
