Drone Strikes Moscow Skyscraper Near Kremlin

A drone struck a skyscraper in Moscow’s Mosfilm Tower overnight, with Russian authorities reporting air defenses engaged multiple aerial targets.

Russian Air Defenses Challenged

Russian Telegram channels published footage overnight of a low-flying drone over Moscow between May 3rd and 4th. Photos subsequently emerged showing damage to the upper floors of a skyscraper.

The Kyiv Independent identified the building as the Mosfilm Tower, a luxury structure located west of the city center. The outlet noted it could not independently verify all reports or claims made by Russian authorities.

Moscow Mayor Confirms Strike

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that Russian air defenses repelled a drone attack targeting the city. He reported one drone hit a building in the Mosfilm Street area.

Sobyanin claimed there were no casualties and that emergency services were on site. Russian media cited his statement, reporting the strike occurred in western Moscow.

Proximity to Key Locations

The Kyiv Independent reported the strike occurred approximately seven kilometers from the Kremlin and Red Square, and around three kilometers from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

The Mosfilm Tower is located in a prestigious area of the city, near embassies and diplomatic residences.

Attack Precedes Victory Day Parade

The attack occurred days before the planned May 9th parade on Red Square. Russia annually uses the Victory Day celebrations to showcase narratives about the USSR’s defeat of Nazi Germany and demonstrate military strength.

However, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that military equipment would not be displayed during this year’s parade.

Ukraine Remains Silent, Continues Strikes

Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on the overnight strike in Moscow. Kyiv regularly attacks military, logistical, and industrial targets within Russia.

In recent days, Ukraine reported strikes on Russian military units and infrastructure related to oil exports. Reuters reported Ukrainian drones attacked the Primorsk port and Russian naval units, with Volodymyr Zelenskyy stating the goal is to reduce Russia’s war potential.

Further Drone Interceptions Reported

Sobyanin reported that Russian air defenses also intercepted additional drones heading towards Moscow overnight. Russian authorities routinely attribute such attacks to Ukraine, but do not always release comprehensive data on the extent of damage.

Ukraine typically does not comment on strikes within Russia immediately after they occur.

Propaganda and Symbolic Significance

Media outlets suggest the incident holds primarily propaganda and symbolic importance. Moscow is heavily protected against aerial attacks, and a strike on a building several kilometers from the Kremlin demonstrates the Russian capital is vulnerable despite its extensive air defenses.
