Poland’s flu season has resulted in over 1,000 deaths and over a million infections, prompting warnings that the healthcare system treating complications is overwhelmed.
Over 1,000 Flu Deaths This Season
More than 1,000 people have died from the flu this season in Poland, with over a million reported cases of infection. Complications from the flu have led to over 21,600 hospitalizations, according to Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, the Chief Sanitary Inspector.
COVID-19 Pandemic Increased Vaccination Awareness
During the Vaccine Meeting 2026, the Chief Sanitary Inspector noted a noticeable increase in vaccination rates in Poland following the COVID-19 pandemic. However, despite growing awareness of preventative measures, flu vaccination rates remain low.
Low Flu Vaccination Rates
Although flu vaccination rates have risen to 2.3 million people, this represents only 6% of the general population, and approximately 16% of those over 65 years of age.
Healthcare System Struggles with Complications
Experts at the Vaccine Meeting emphasized that the healthcare system focused on treating flu complications is insufficient. They advocate for a streamlined vaccination process, offering free vaccinations during a single visit to a primary care physician.
Improving Vaccination Data and Reimbursement
Participants suggested that each vaccination intervention should be recorded in an electronic vaccination card linked to the Internet Patient Account. Professor Agnieszka Mastalerz-Migas, National Consultant in Family Medicine, highlighted the need for a service reimbursement system covering vaccine purchase and administration, with accurate reporting of completed services.
Need for Integrated Vaccination Data
Professor Ernest Kuchar, Chairman of the Polish Society of Vaccinology, stated that despite increasing digitalization and the implementation of the e-Vaccination Card, collected data remains fragmented and analyzed with delays. He stressed the importance of an integrated system providing decision-makers with up-to-date dashboards on vaccination rates by region and age group.
Calls for Modernized Vaccination System
Attendees at the Vaccine Meeting 2026 called for the introduction of a modern vaccination system and strengthening the role of the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate as an analytical center.
