Greenland politician Tillie Martinussen explains why her people reject Trump’s offer to sell Greenland, citing cultural values and European standards.
Greenlander Politician Rejects Trump’s Offer
Tillie Martinussen addressed Donald Trump’s proposals in a conversation with the ATP channel. In an emotional yet extremely balanced and—commentators note—coherent and logical speech, she explained why Greenlanders are not interested in the US “offer” and how it relates to their culture, which is radically different from American culture. “I think Trump doesn’t know Greenlanders. We don’t value cash, Kardashian-style lips, or fake breasts very highly,” stated Martinussen, adding that in Greenland, land is a common good and cannot be owned. In her opinion, the desire to purchase the island is a manifestation of greed that drives Americans even to “invade their own friends.”
Greenlanders Prioritize European Standards
The financial issue, while tempting to many, cannot compensate Greenlanders for the loss of their welfare state model. Martinussen emphasized that no amount would persuade them to give up European standards. “Even if you offered $100,000 per person, we would not give up free healthcare, free education, and being part of Europe,” the MP stated. She recalled that in her country, the government not only provides free education but also pays students grants for living expenses, which stands in stark contrast to the American system.
Fears of Racial Discrimination and Rights Loss
In her view, a serious argument against closer ties with the USA is the fear of racial discrimination and loss of rights for the indigenous population. Martinussen referred to the tragic fate of the Inuit in Alaska and Indians in the continental United States, whose land was taken and who were not treated well. “We are not white. We are people of color. We know our rights would likely be taken away from us,” she warned, referring to ICE agents’ actions in America, which she believes primarily target people with darker skin. She also noted that American soldiers stationed on the island have previously treated its residents inappropriately.
Long-term Strategy Beyond Trump Administration
The politician rejected a purely transactional approach to the island’s natural resources, such as minerals or oil. Although they are worth a fortune, they do not justify “selling” sovereignty. Using the metaphor of a dog sled team, Martinussen compared US unpredictability to a dog that suddenly bites its handler, causing it to lose trust forever. She also pointed to the powerful arsenal of allies (France, Canada, Denmark) who would stand by Greenland in case of escalation, as well as the fact that 74% of ordinary Americans don’t want an invasion of their country.
400-Year Ties with Denmark Will Prevail
In conclusion, Martinussen expressed confidence that Greenland will survive the current tensions while maintaining strong ties with Denmark, which is connected by a 400-year history. She believes Trump views Greenlanders as uneducated, which is untrue as they are well-informed about world news. “We will be here hundreds of years after Donald Trump. Even if he invades, we’ll just wait him out like bad weather,” she stated, believing that relations will return to normal after the current administration leaves. Meanwhile, tensions are rising as the US plans to impose punitive tariffs on goods from Nordic and European allies starting in 2026.
