Half of PiS MPs Refuse to Pay New Membership Fee, Treasurer Demands Payment

Half of the Law and Justice party MPs have stopped paying a mandatory monthly fee introduced by leader Jarosław Kaczyński, prompting Treasurer Henryk Kowalczyk to send reminders.

Half of PiS MPs Do Not Pay Kaczyński’s New Contribution

Half of the Law and Justice (PiS) MPs have ceased paying the monthly fee that was introduced by party leader Jarosław Kaczyński.

Background of the Mandatory Contribution

Last year Kaczyński mandated a compulsory monthly fee for PiS MPs and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). MPs must pay 1,000 złoty each month, while MEPs are required to contribute 5,000 złoty. Following PiS’s victory in the recent presidential elections, the Treasurer, Henryk Kowalczyk, announced that many parliamentarians had stopped making these payments.

Treasure’s Contact with Non‑Paying MPs

Kowalczyk has reached out to MPs who have not transferred the required amounts to the party’s account. He has sent emails to all overdue members and followed up with calls, urging them to settle the debt before year’s end.

Financial Needs and Delayed Invoices

According to Kowalczyk, the party still faces significant financial obligations, including unpaid invoices for the last congress that could amount to 1.5‑2 million złoty. He declined to name the individuals who are behind on payments.

State Electoral Commission Rejects PiS Election Report

PiS introduced the mandatory contribution amid financial problems highlighted by the State Electoral Commission (PKW), which rejected the party’s financial report from the 2023 parliamentary elections in August 2024. The Ministry of Finance subsequently cut PiS’s election grants and last year’s subsidies.
